February 16th 1954 -June 9th 2013.
Iain Banks was a Scottish author writing mainstream fiction under the name Iain Banks, and science fiction as Iain M. Banks. His death comes after his website announcement on April 3rd of his inoperable cancer.
His SF books created the thoughtful and intriguing 'The Culture', a far future society of intelligent machines with what Banks called ' a well armed liberal niceness'. Liberal and well armed was a combination that formed the basis of a variety of highly inventive tales that were both exciting and thought provoking.
For instance this quote I have been wanting to share and which suggests Banks, for all his awards, prizes, and recognition, had a rye self awareness and in no danger of becoming puffed up and pompous -
" Being a famous artist in the Culture meant at best it was accepted you must possess a certain gritty determination; at worse it was generally seen as pointing to a pitiably archaic form of insecurity and a rather childish desire to show off. "

Matilda

These images were scanned from the Guardian newspaper's 'Weekend' supplement. There are five pages of Matilda Tristram's comic. The accompanying article is concerned with Matilda's experience. It doesn't give any details of where, when or how the comic might be seen.
Matilda Tristram has a website where, in addition to other work, drawings for this story appear but it looks as though Matilda has developed, and coloured, it for paper publication.

Ray Harryhausen RIP

Ray Harryhausen was the clay-model animator responsible for creating Dynamation, - the technique, not the word. This used Harryhausen designed models in stop-motion animation combined with live action footage.
He did make films that were all animation but what this escapist, fantasist, adventure story loving boy loved best were the live actor and animated model movies with heroes engaging with magic, mythology, monsters and the macabre.
Ray Harryhausen was a mind boggling, eye opening, innovative, inspirational artist. His influence demonstrated for instance in the fact of Wallace and Gromit's piano bearing the makers name 'Harryhausen'.

Serbia right

The market for comics in Serbia fell after the break-up of the old Yugoslavia and the ex-Yugoslavian republics. With a lowered standard of living people had less money for, or interest in, comics. A circulation of 500 for a magazine became regarded as a big circulation.

Branko Djukik is trying to change that state of affairs by launching a magazine. 'The Academic Comic Strip' will publish comic strips from the top authors in Serbia and articles on strip theory. Its aim is to show high quality comic strips with an emphasis on content with an interest in comic strip as a literary form. Established creators Zoran Janjetov, Zeljko Pahek, Darko Nenadov are donating work and new young artists will be given a platform for their work.

These and other artists plan to exhibit original artwork country wide as a part of the launch.

Branko Djudic is also raising funds to put on a comic festival at the Cultural Centre in the city of Zrenjanin.

About 20 authors working for the French market have already accepted an invitation to attend. "inspired by love and passion for the art".

Њен циљ је да покаже висок квалитет стрипова, са нагласком на садржају која имају интерес у стрипу као књижевног облика. Основана ствараоци Зоран Јањетов, Жељко Пахек, Дарко Перовић, Дејан Ненадов се донирају рад и нови млади уметник ће добити платформу за њихов рад.
Ови и други уметници планирају да излажу оригиналних радова широм земље као део лансирања.
Бранка Ђукић је такође подизање новца да стави на фестивалу стрипа у "Културном центру" у Зрењанину више од 20 аутора који раде за француско тржиште већ прихватио позив да присуствује .. "инспирисан љубави и страсти за уметношћу"

It's a lady

One of the pleasures of Rebellion, the UK publishers of comics 2000AD and The Judge Dredd Megazine, has been its willingness to break boundaries. In this case a little late in the day but as far as memory and some superficial internet research can be trusted I believe this is the first time they have used a female artist for one of their stories. The latest edition of the Megazine introduces illustrator Fay Dalton. Fay Dalton has the cover and two pages ( two pages?) of the new Reaper Files series. Difficult to tell from the little presented whether the story is anything to celebrate but a woman in mainstream comics is.
